Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was a pioneer of pure abstraction, moving from his early Munich circle Der Blaue Reiter through his geometric Bauhaus period to become one of the first painters to abandon representational subject matter entirely, believing color and form alone could carry direct emotional and spiritual meaning.
