Picture with a Black Arch, by Wassily Kandinsky arranges a sweeping black arched line, recalling the shaft bow of a Russian troika harness, around three colliding masses of blue, purple, and red set against a luminous field of yellow and cream. Painted in Munich in 1912, it stands among the earliest fully non-representational compositions by Kandinsky, the Russian-born painter (1866-1944) and pioneer of abstract art associated with the Munich-based Der Blaue Reiter group.
