Rain Landscape, by Wassily Kandinsky dissolves a countryside view into curling, fringed bands of ochre, brown, rose, and blue-gray, its wavy contours evoking sheets of rain sweeping across a hillside while faint traces of a horse and rider remain visible within the swirling forms. Painted in 1911, the same year Kandinsky published his treatise Concerning the Spiritual in Art and co-founded the Munich-based Der Blaue Reiter group with Franz Marc, it captures the Russian-born painter (1866-1944) at the transitional moment when he was pushing figuration toward pure abstraction.
