Crinoline Lady, by Wassily Kandinsky depicts two women in wide hoop-skirted dresses within a fantastical garden of nested arches, one strolling with a spotted dog and walking stick, the other seated at a small table with a bouquet of flowers, while miniature townscapes and sailboats appear in the margins beyond. Painted in Moscow in 1918, during the years Kandinsky spent in Russia through World War I and the Russian Revolution, it revisits the fashionable crinoline motif he had explored roughly a decade earlier, folding legible figures into the arched, biomorphic forms that were coming to define his mature style.
