Black Spot, 1912 by Wassily Kandinsky is a seminal early abstract composition dominated by a large dark, wheel-like form at its center, a curved blue arch-like shape suggestive of an animal profile at lower left, and a small red bird motif at right, all set against a soft pastel ground. Painted in Munich and now held in the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the work exemplifies Kandinsky's move toward pure abstraction, where form and color carry emotional weight independent of any literal subject.
Artist: Wassily Kandinsky (Russian, 1866-1944). Date: 1912.
