Impression V (Park), by Wassily Kandinsky dissolves a public park into sweeping fields of red, orange, and blue anchored by loose black calligraphic lines that hint at strolling figures and a horse rather than describing them outright. Painted in Munich in 1911 by the Russian-born painter and pioneer of abstract art, the canvas dates to the same year Kandinsky published Concerning the Spiritual in Art and co-founded the Der Blaue Reiter group with Franz Marc.
