On White II, by Wassily Kandinsky arranges triangles, circles, checkerboard patterning, and crossing diagonal lines across a luminous white ground, with a large dotted blue sphere and a warm brown triangular mass anchoring the composition's left side. Kandinsky, the Russian-born painter and pioneer of abstract art, painted the canvas in 1923 while teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where his forms sharpened from the freer, biomorphic shapes of his Munich years into the precise geometric vocabulary seen here.
