The Seine at Argenteuil, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1888, frames a calm bend of the river between banks of gold and rust autumn foliage, a single sailboat drifting past the distant rooftops and spires of the town. Returning to a subject he had painted often in the 1870s, Renoir revisits Argenteuil more than a decade later with a warmer, more structured palette shaped by his intervening travels in Italy. The painting is held today in the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia.
