The Seine at Argenteuil (La Seine à Argenteuil), 1888 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Choose options
The Seine at Argenteuil, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1888, looks across the broad river toward the leafy western bank, where a lone sailboat drifts beneath a wide, luminous sky and the spires of the town rise faintly in the distance. The composition unfolds in warm orange and golden autumn foliage, a soft blue sky, and blue river water, animated by the firmer, more controlled brushwork Renoir developed after returning from his Italian journey in the mid-1880s. By this date Argenteuil had become both a beloved subject and something of a memorial to the founding moment of Impressionism, since the Monet household had departed the town years earlier. The painting is held today in the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia.
