Argenteuil, Late Afternoon (Argenteuil, fin d’après-midi), 1872 by Claude Monet
Argenteuil, Late Afternoon, painted by Claude Monet in 1872 depicts the Seine at Argenteuil bathed in the soft pink and gold light of dusk, a lone sailboat drifting near the riverbank as the town’s rooftops and factory chimney rise faintly against the glowing sky. Monet had settled in Argenteuil the previous year, and this quiet evening view belongs to the earliest, most tranquil phase of his riverside painting campaigns, before the town’s regattas and modern villas became his more frequent subjects.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1872.
