Argenteuil at the End of the Afternoon, painted by Claude Monet in 1872, shows the riverside town bathed in the soft, golden light of dusk, its church spire and rooftops reflected in the still waters of the Seine as a lone sailboat drifts near the bank. The painting belongs to the foundational Argenteuil period of 1871 to 1872, the months immediately preceding the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, when Monet’s rapid, broken brushwork and close attention to changing light first reached full maturity.
