West Point, Prout's Neck, 1900, by Winslow Homer depicts a wave shattering into a towering plume of spray against the dark rocks of Prout's Neck, Maine, painted from the cliffs near Homer's own studio looking southwest across Saco Bay. Homer described the scene as painted "fifteen minutes after sunset, not one minute before," capturing the fading rose-and-violet afterglow he considered essential to the picture's mood, and counted it among his finest paintings.
