Washerwomen at Pont-Aven, by Paul Gauguin depicts village women at work along a rocky Breton stream, its stone cottages half-hidden behind dense trees and shrubbery. Painted in 1886 during one of Gauguin's early stays in the Brittany artists' colony of Pont-Aven, the work reflects the rural simplicity that drew him and other painters to the region before his later, more radical Synthetist style emerged.
