Village at the Water's Edge, by Paul Cézanne depicts L'Estaque, the coastal village near Marseille that Cézanne returned to throughout his career, its ochre cliffs and terracotta rooftops mirrored in broad, patchwork strokes of blue and gold across the water below. Paul Cézanne (French, 1839–1906) was a pivotal Post-Impressionist whose structural, color-built approach to landscape helped bridge 19th-century Impressionism and the birth of modern painting.
Artist: Paul Cézanne (1839–1906). Date: c. 1876.
