Le Canvas Atelier
View of Cagnes, c. 1900 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
View of Cagnes, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir c. 1900 captures a sweeping panorama of the medieval hilltop village of Cagnes-sur-Mer rising above silvery olive groves on the French Riviera. Rendered in warm ochre, terracotta, and dusty green tones, the loose, sun-warmed brushwork reflects the freedom Renoir found late in his career, when he sought out the warmer, gentler light of the south. The painting belongs to the group of Provençal landscapes Renoir produced after he began wintering in the south, in the years just before he settled permanently in Cagnes.
