Vache d’Ayr, 1861–1862 by Émile van Marcke

Vache d’Ayr, 1861–1862, by Émile van Marcke shows a brown-and-white Ayrshire dairy cow standing beside a weathered wooden fence, a quiet river valley and distant hills stretching out behind her. Van Marcke was a French Barbizon School painter who trained under Constant Troyon and became, after Troyon’s death, widely regarded as Europe’s leading painter of cattle; this plate was engraved by A. Riffaut and printed by Lemercier of Paris for Les Races Bovines au Concours Universel Agricole de Paris en 1856.
