The Three Trees by Rembrandt van Rijn is a masterful etching and drypoint depicting a dramatic Dutch landscape – three windswept trees crown a low hill under a churning sky, rain streaking down at left while sunlight breaks through at right, with a distant flat countryside of windmills, cattle, and travelers unfolding below. Rembrandt (1606–1669), the preeminent painter and printmaker of the Dutch Golden Age, created this print in 1643 as his largest and most technically ambitious landscape work, renowned for its dramatic contrasts of light and its atmospheric depth.
