The Round-Up, c. 1888, by Frederic Remington shows a lone cowboy on horseback pausing above a grazing cattle herd beneath a distant butte, with fellow riders working the herd in the background. Remington (1861–1909) was the preeminent chronicler of the American West in his era, and this wood engraving first appeared in the April 1888 issue of Century Magazine as part of his illustrations for Theodore Roosevelt's Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail.
