The Rocky Mountains, c. 1872, by Worthington Whittredge presents a sweeping view of a Native American encampment beside a quiet river, tepees and grazing horses set against cottonwood trees and a distant range of snow-capped peaks. The steel engraving, made by Robert Hinshelwood after Whittredge's painting, appeared in William Cullen Bryant's Picturesque America, the celebrated illustrated survey of American scenery; Whittredge was among the leading Hudson River School painters whose western landscapes helped shape the era's vision of the American frontier.
