The Parthenon, by Frederic Edwin Church captures the ruined Doric temple crowning the Acropolis at sunset, its colonnade bathed in golden light above a foreground scattered with fallen capitals and marble fragments. Church, the preeminent painter of the Hudson River School, traveled to Athens in 1869 and spent weeks sketching the ruins that formed the basis for this large-scale luminous landscape.
