The Mountain Pass, Sierra Nevada, by Fanny Palmer depicts a black bear pausing on a fallen log beside a rushing mountain stream, with a waterfall, granite cliffs, and sunlit peaks rising behind it in a romanticized vision of the American wilderness. Palmer, an English-born lithographer and one of the most prolific artists at Currier & Ives, was renowned for her sweeping frontier landscapes that helped shape the popular American image of the West.
