The Mackerel, by Eleazar Albin depicts a mackerel rendered in fine hand-coloured detail, its dark tiger-striped back and silvery-white underside precisely observed against a pale washed background, with the fish's Latin, French, and English names inscribed beneath. Albin (c. 1680–1742) was a German-born English naturalist and watercolourist who settled in London, best known for his meticulously observed illustrated works on birds, insects, and fish, produced with the assistance of his daughter Elizabeth.
