The Flying Dutchman and Voltigeur at York Racecourse, by John Frederick Herring, Sr. captures the deciding heat of the Great Match of 13 May 1851, in which the Derby-winning rivals Voltigeur and The Flying Dutchman raced before a vast crowd at York’s Knavesmire course. Herring, an English painter and the foremost equestrian artist of his generation, was celebrated for his precise, dynamic renderings of Thoroughbred racehorses at full stride.
