The Flying Bedstead, W.O. Ayres’ Flying Machine, 1885 illustrates the fantastical aerial invention devised by Connecticut physician and naturalist William Orville Ayres, published in Scientific American’s May 1885 issue. The engraving depicts its rider perched inside a scaffold-like frame studded with propellers, powered by twin compressed-air cylinders and pedal cranks, epitomizing the inventive optimism of the pre-flight era.
