The Doge’s Palace, Venice, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir shows the sunlit facade of the Doge’s Palace and the Campanile rising above the shimmering Venetian lagoon, with sailboats and gondolas animating the foreground. Renoir, the French Impressionist (1841-1919), painted it during his first visit to Venice, and its luminous handling of light and water is characteristic of his work.
