The Dalmatian, or Coach Dog, by Frederick William Keyl is a 19th-century engraving showing a spotted Dalmatian captured mid-stride beside a carriage horse's legs, evoking the breed's traditional working role running alongside horse-drawn coaches. Keyl (1823–1871), a German-born animal painter active in Victorian England who received several commissions from Queen Victoria and illustrated dog and animal subjects for the period's natural-history publications, is credited as the original draughtsman, with the plate engraved by Pearson.
Artist: Frederick William Keyl (1823–1871).
