The Cliffs at Etretat (Falaises à Étretat), c. 1885 by Claude Monet – Bright Aqua Edition
The Cliffs at Etretat (Falaises à Étretat), painted by Claude Monet in 1885 captures the towering chalk cliffs of the Normandy coast, where the natural stone arch known as the Manneporte rises beside a slender needle of rock called the Aiguille. Tiny sailboats drift far below, emphasizing the sublime scale of the cliffs Monet could only reach by a precarious path or by boat. Painted during one of his many autumn stays at Etretat between 1883 and 1886, the work is part of a series capturing the dramatic light and geology of this celebrated stretch of coastline.
