The Canoe, by Tom Thomson depicts an empty canoe resting on a rocky northern shoreline, tangled among wind-fallen branches and driftwood at the water’s edge, with dark pine forest and a hazy blue lake beyond. Thomson, one of Canada’s most significant landscape painters and a direct precursor to the Group of Seven, is celebrated for exactly this kind of bold, direct plein air oil sketching of the Algonquin wilderness he loved and where he would die five years later.
Artist: Tom Thomson, 1877–1917. Date: 1912.
