Choose options
Sunset at Étretat, painted by Claude Monet in 1883, captures the dramatic cliffs and natural arch of the Normandy coast as a dark, blue-grey mass against a grey-violet sky, with a narrow band of orange and gold at the horizon reflected in a green, rippling sea. Monet made this scene during his repeated winter sojourns to Étretat between 1882 and 1886, chasing the fleeting effects of light across the same cliffs at different hours and seasons. The painting is one of his Étretat views, here with the last glow of the day set against the heavy shadow of the rock.
