Still Life with Pitcher and Fruit, 1885-87 by Paul Cézanne

Still Life with Pitcher and Fruit, painted by Paul Cézanne in 1885-87 arranges a glazed stoneware pitcher beside a scatter of pears and small green apples, several resting on a plain white plate, set against a softly brushed lavender-gray wall and warm brown tabletop. Painted during the productive mid-1880s years Cézanne spent largely in Provence, the composition reduces its subject to essential volumes, each pear and apple built from patient, faceted strokes of color rather than outline. The muted, closely related tones of the wall and table let the fruit's rounded forms carry the full weight of the picture, a hallmark of the increasingly structural, geometric approach that defined his mature still-life practice of this period.
