Still Life with Apples and a Pot of Primroses, 1890, by Paul Cézanne gathers a loose cascade of apples across a white cloth beside a stoneware pot of blossoming primroses, its green leaves and pale pink flowers rising against a soft blue-green wall. Painted by this French Post-Impressionist artist (1839-1906) renowned for his still lifes exploring form and structure, it is one of only a few Cézanne still lifes to include flowering plants, since cut blooms wilted too quickly for his slow, deliberate method.
