Shoes, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, presents a single worn pair of leather boots set upon a tiled floor, rendered in an earthy palette of ochre, olive, and warm tan with the thick, textured brushwork of his Arles period. Painted at the Yellow House in Arles, the composition transforms a humble, well-worn object into a meditation on toil, poverty, and the dignity of manual labour. Now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, it remains one of the most philosophically resonant still lifes in his entire body of work.
Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1888.
