Ships Riding on the Seine at Rouen, painted by Claude Monet in 1872-73, captures tall-masted sailing ships resting at anchor on the calm river outside Rouen. Their pale furled sails and dark hulls dissolve into broken reflections on the water, while a green hillside and the distant spires of the city close the horizon beneath a breezy blue sky. Monet painted this scene during his Argenteuil years, when the working traffic of the Seine gave him endless subjects for studying light, water and modern river life.
