Ships Riding on the Seine at Rouen, painted by Claude Monet in 1872-73, shows two tall-masted sailing vessels lying at anchor on a glassy stretch of the Seine near Rouen. Loose strokes of white sail, dark hull and green shoreline scatter into shimmering reflections, with the city's distant spires just visible beneath a soft blue sky. The canvas belongs to Monet's Argenteuil period, when river traffic on the Seine became one of his favourite laboratories for capturing light and water.
