Sandvika, Norway (Sandviken, Norvège), painted by Claude Monet in 1895 shows a snow-covered Norwegian village huddled beneath a dark wooded hillside, with the iron Løkke Bridge spanning the icy river in the foreground. Monet painted this scene during his two-month winter journey to Norway in early 1895, when he visited his stepson Jacques Hoschede and worked outdoors in the deep snow around Sandvika, near Christiania. The composition, with its bold bridge motif and flattened planes of snow and shadow, recalls the Japanese woodblock prints Monet admired and collected throughout his career.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1895.
