Sandvika, Norway (Sandviken, Norvège), painted by Claude Monet in 1895 depicts the snow-laden Norwegian village near Christiania, now Oslo, its iron bridge and red-walled houses nearly dissolving into the pale winter air beneath the looming form of Mount Kolsaas. Monet painted the scene during a two-month visit to Norway in early 1895, one of more than two dozen canvases begun on that northern journey. The village bridge reminded him of the Japanese prints he collected, and the painting now hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago.
