Rigid and Statuesque, c. 1905, by Edward S. Curtis shows three Crow (Apsáalooke) men in full regalia perched along a rocky cliff ledge, gazing out over a wide Montana valley below. Curtis, an American photographer and ethnologist, staged the scene during his fieldwork among the Crow Nation as part of his sweeping documentary project "The North American Indian," which set out to record traditional Native American life across more than eighty tribes.
