Red-Breasted Sandpiper, by John James Audubon captures two shorebirds along a rocky coast, the foreground bird's warm salmon breast and finely scaled back contrasting with its companion's paler, mottled plumage below. Also known in Audubon's day as the Robin Snipe or Knot, this species was a favorite subject among 19th-century naturalists, and Audubon, the era's foremost bird artist, rendered it with his signature blend of scientific accuracy and painterly grace.
