Pont Neuf, Paris, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1872, looks across the Seine toward the oldest standing bridge in Paris, crowded with pedestrians, carriages, and a gendarme in dark blue as they cross beneath a bright, cloud-scattered sky. Renoir secured a cafe room overlooking the bridge for a single day to capture the scene, with his brother Edmond delaying passersby so he could study their poses. Painted in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War, the canvas is one of Renoir's earliest and most celebrated views of modern Paris street life, today held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
