Pimientos, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1912, gathers a cluster of glossy red and green peppers alongside a ripe tomato and a few sprigs of garlic and greens, arranged on a softly draped white cloth against a warm rose-and-ochre background. The brushwork is feathered and unhurried, the palette built on saturated vermilion and green set off by the loose folds of white linen beneath. By 1912 Renoir was working from his home and studio in the south of France, largely confined by arthritis, and these intimate vegetable studies became a sustained, sensuous strand of his late practice.
