Peaches, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881, gathers a mound of ripe fruit in a white faience bowl on a white tablecloth, with one peach set apart as a quiet counterpoint to the pyramid of fruit above. Renoir painted this still life during a summer stay at the Berard family home in Wargemont, Normandy, working in a velvety, almost trompe-l'oeil brushwork that drew praise at the 1882 Impressionist exhibition. The picture is now held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of two related peach still lifes Renoir made from the same household bowl that summer.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: 1881.
