Pacific Heron, c. 1848 by John Gould and H.C. Richter depicts a Pacific heron perched on a weathered branch amid broad-leaved foliage, its dark chestnut-black wing plumage set against a slender white neck and sharp yellow eye, with two additional herons wading in the water beyond. The plate, captioned Ardea Pacifica, is drawn from John Gould's landmark The Birds of Australia; this later-volume plate was illustrated by Henry Constantine Richter, who became Gould's principal artist after the death of his wife and original illustrator, Elizabeth Gould, in 1841.
