Navy Basket of Flowers I by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer
Navy Basket of Flowers I, by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer depicts an overflowing basket of tulips, garden roses, and flowering sprigs set upon a stone ledge, rendered in a rich navy-and-ivory engraving treatment. The plate carries the printed legend “Livres de Plusieurs Paniers de Fleurs, dessiné et gravé par J. Baptiste, avec privilège du Roy,” the name under which Monnoyer (1636-1699), the French Baroque painter and engraver celebrated for his decorative flower compositions, designed and engraved his flower books; his designs shaped the interiors of Versailles and the tapestry workshops of the Gobelins and Beauvais manufactories.
Artist: Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636-1699). Date: c. 1680 to 1695.
