Michigan Lumbering, c. 1890

Michigan Lumbering, c. 1890 captures a lumberjack seated atop a horse-drawn timber sled, reins in hand, as two draft horses pause in a snow-covered stand of tall, fire-scarred pines. The sled's long runners and heavy timber frame point to the iced hauling roads used to drag freshly cut logs out of Michigan's forests each winter, at the height of the state's 19th-century white pine lumber boom.
