Meat for the Tribe, by Charles M. Russell, depicts a mounted hunter closing in on a bull bison at close range, rifle raised, as a second rider looks on from a rise in the distance beneath a wind-blown sky. Russell was an American artist (1864-1926) and one of the most celebrated painters of the cowboy West, and this 1891 buffalo-hunt scene reflects the firsthand knowledge of the Montana range he gained working as a cowboy in the Judith Basin.
