Lakota Sioux Camp, c. 1891, by John C.H. Grabill shows a sprawling encampment of tipis, horses, and wagons stretching across the plains, likely photographed on or near the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Grabill was a Deadwood-based frontier photographer active in the late 1880s and early 1890s, and this documentary image of the northern plains — taken in the tense months following the Wounded Knee Massacre — is part of a collection of his work held today by the Library of Congress.
