Interior of Primeval Forest on the Amazons, by Henry Walter Bates is a densely detailed wood engraving of the Amazon rainforest's interior — towering buttressed trunks, hanging vines, feathery palms and ferns crowding a quiet forest pool, with two figures at the water's edge — originally published as a plate in Bates' 1863 book The Naturalist on the River Amazons. Henry Walter Bates (English, 1825–1892) spent eleven years surveying the Amazon basin alongside Alfred Russel Wallace, cataloguing thousands of new species and becoming one of Victorian science's most celebrated naturalist-explorers.
