Hurricane, Bahamas, 1898, by Winslow Homer depicts palm trees whipped violently by tropical wind above the red-tiled rooftops of a Bahamian village, painted during Homer's second trip to the islands as his watercolors turned toward capturing extreme weather rather than the idyllic tropical scenes of his earlier 1884–85 visit. A small red ensign flag, marking the islands' status as a British crown colony, flutters near a rooftop beneath the churning storm clouds.
