Hotel Tramontano, Sorrento, Italy, by Giorgio Sommer captures the hotel perched along the sheer tufa cliffs above the Bay of Naples, its facade and the neighboring Hotel Tasso rising above bathing huts and rocky shallows. Sommer (1834–1914), a German-born photographer who established his studio in Naples in 1857, was one of the most prolific documentarians of 19th-century Italy, producing thousands of images of its ruins, landscapes, and coastal towns.
