Homestake Gold Mine, c. 1900 This hand-tinted photochrome view looks down over the mining town of Lead, South Dakota, in the Black Hills, showing the Homestake works at the height of its productivity. Founded in 1876 by Moses and Fred Manuel and acquired the following year by a San Francisco syndicate led by George Hearst, Homestake grew into the largest and deepest gold mine in the Western Hemisphere, operating continuously until 2002.
